Fishing is getting cheaper - especially if you don't take a reel!!!

At just £25 for a full year’s coarse fishing licence, and with rod and line packages starting from around £30, fishing is becoming the price-savvy consumer’s pastime of choice, coming in at under £5 a month

EA Press Release 2009 set to be a bumper year for fishing

Record number of rod licence sales last year as credit crunch bites More than 1.3 million people took to the rivers in 2008 fully armed with a fishing rod and licence in a bid to find credit crunch-friendly entertainment that won’t break the bank.
Rod licence sales hit a record high last year and are predicted to increase by a further 26,000 this year as cash-strapped consumers seek out cheap alternatives to increasingly expensive trips to the cinema, football and theatre. At just £25 for a full year’s coarse fishing licence, and with rod and line packages starting from around £30, fishing is becoming the price-savvy consumer’s pastime of choice, coming in at under £5 a month. Annually, that’s £40 cheaper than a monthly trip to the cinema (without overpriced snacks), over £300 cheaper than a monthly theatre ticket, and over £500 cheaper than a premier league season ticket.

Mat Crocker, Head of Fisheries at the Environment Agency, said: “Angling is one of the most popular participator sports in the world – and is a cheap, healthy and environmentally friendly pastime that everyone can enjoy. It brings huge social and community benefits as well as contributing to the conservation and biodiversity of our waterways.

“Environment Agency research also shows that anglers generate around £1billion in revenue every year – a vital contribution to the UK economy. “

Rod licence sales generate over £23 million in revenue each year, which the Environment Agency ploughs directly back into the sport.

The £25 rod licence fee helps pay for habitat improvement works, fisheries research, monitoring and advice to owners on fish stocks. It also funds the specialist equipment used in fish rescues and enforcement to protect fish stocks, as well as the Environment Agency’s fish farms at Calverton and Leyland. These fish farms provide hundreds of thousands of fish which are stocked to improve popular angling spots and rivers across England and Wales.

Improved river quality over the past decade has also helped boost fish stocks for the sport – for example, salmon numbers in England and Wales have increased by 40,000 in the last ten years thanks to better water quality and improved habitats.

Buying a new rod licence couldn’t be easier – around 15,000 Post Offices and other outlets sell them; a direct debit can be set up, and they can be purchased over the telephone on 0870 166 2662. Alternatively buy online at www.environment-agency.gov.uk/rodlicence any time, day or night.

The first rod licences were issued in the 1860s for the newly created fishery districts. Much like today, they were available to buy at the post office. The cost of a licence varied across the districts and a licence had to be purchased for every district in which you fished. A national rod licence was introduced 1992, allowing anglers to fish anywhere in England and Wales with just one licence.

Yesterday on morning TV they were reporting on Football grounds allowing youngsters into Football matches for free and they suggested the Goverment should be involved .I wouldnt watch the football if it was on the green in our street they waste enough money on wages.Back to Fishing though Northumbria Water Board allow a senior to take two juniors fishing for Free on their Reservoirs, also their is free fishing at www.dofreefishing.com/ all around the country .I wish they would put more effort into promoting Angling into schools and librays they could even give the juniours a free licence .after all the EA is the goverment isnt it.I think i had better send the MP a letter because they dont seem as though they can think for themselves:)

There are clubs/associations throughout the country that do promote Angling and encourage juniors to take up the sport and carry it on, one such club, on my doorstep WAADA (Windermere & Ambleside) (website below) have a very healthy stock of juniors among the membership (The Kingfishers), and there is plenty of money made available and ploughed in each season for this purpose, and a lot of man hours are put in from adult members to pass on thier knowledge, they have just had a purpose built chalet/lodge put up on one of thier waters for the sole purpose of teaching the youngsters. Not only do they teach them, regular competitions are held for them with some cracking prizes to boot, Tackle is provided for the kids that dont have much of their own, they also have organised BBQ's from time to time at the end of their sessions, whereby Parents attend and encouraged to enter into the spitit of things.

If this isn't promoting angling and getting youngsters interested, then what is
like I said there must be many more clubs that offer the same support and encouragement that this club do, they cant be the only one.

Five years ago the Manx fisheries decided to give Junior anglers. ie under 16..A free licence to fish the resevoirs... they could still take the legal limit of fish.
Our resevoirs are dangerous to fish because of sheer drop offs sometimes under your feet... I wont wade em, and its banned anyway. Fishing for these free licence holders was supposed to be accompanied by an adult only. What happened ????? The parents come along, drop a hoard of kids with spinning rods off at the res, and disappear  It was left to the anglers to watch other peoples kids... There are not enough bailiffs to go around anyway.. these gangs are a pest........ Words with parents ,if able to find parents , is often an answer full of abuse.... They only use the free licence to get shut for the day.... Trying to help many of these kids.. is also often met with abuse.... for me it was the final nail in my Manx fishing experiance.....The only fly only resevoirs are, for me, unreachable.
I have also in the past taken Groups of Teenagers fishing, ( youth group work) I supplied tackle and bait free... I stopped because of the number of times I was stolen from......I know not all children are bad ...But I wont take the chance again...
Why dont you do something about it yourself ????? Just suggesting free licences and promotion in schools sounds great.... but not when some other johnnie has to keep their eye on someone elses kids..... if you already do then then good on you.... but you aint ever mentioned it..

I have taken youngsters on my ticket on Northumbria Waters .They are still fishing now after i set them off with the worm .I am at preasant getting some tackle together to give to another Forum after being asked to help underprivilaged kids . I have in the past taken a fishing friend who is wheelchair bound with me .I campaigned for a change in the unfairness to the disabled when applying for a concessionary licence, the EA allowes people who hold a blue badge to apply for a concessionary licence ,as a result two friends of mine have started to come fishing again .I thought it was good to encourage more anglers, our club encourages us to do just that.I have been giving another angler on another site contacts and tactics so that he can take up winter grayling fishing for the first time on the river Wear.He went last week and thanked me and said even though he never caught a fish he will be going more river fishing and wants to give the sea-trout a try on the Wear.:confused:PB
