I recently read an article on the record breaking Steelhead trout run going on right now in Idaho. According to the author, over 310,000 Steelhead trout are in the river, including 44,000 wild fish, with more to follow. The Idaho Dept of Fish and Game estimates up to 100,000 in one section of the river between the North Fork and Stanley. The Salmon River is quite big here, before it plunges down the canyon known to Lewis and Clark as the "River of No Return". Plenty of Old West history around here! Lewis and Clark took different way!
It should be good fishing, and as I am in Montana today, I hope to give it a shot. It is only two hundred miles from where I am today!
The magazine is at www.montanaheadwall.com on pg 15 of Winter 2009.
