If it's modern salmon fly patterns, rather than a book you are better off looking at internet sites,e.g.

http://salmo.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=flytyingstepbystep

http://www.gwentanglingsociety.co.uk/flies/salmon/
Patterns arent that important though would be nice. Im just looking for a good book on Salmon fly fishing that I can read over the winter and hopefully get some pointers from. Not too heavy like the hugh falkus sea trout book which is a good in depth book, Im wanting to keep my fishing simple and not over complicate things.....

I would still recommend reading Hugh Falkus Salmon fishing. Not "modern", but still as relevant today as it was 30 years ago.

For me it's 'salmon taking times' by R.V. Righyni ..his theories go with my rivers and all his theories appear on my rivers....my fishing is worked around this book,,,it doesn't tell you so much how but tells you more why;)then maybe you can adapt it to your own fishing:rolleyes:

Progressive Fly Fishing for Salmon, by Alexander Baird Keachie is one of the best books on salmon fly fishing that I have read.

They were being sold off cheap (£5) a few years back - you might find one on ebay but I was shocked when I saw the amazon price:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=ntt_athr_dp_sr_1?_encoding=UTF8&search-alias=books-uk&field-author=Alexander Baird Keachie

This is possibly the best book on salmon fishing since Falkus, but it is out of print and prices have rocketed:

John

There are not really all that many up-to-date books on contemporary Salmon Fishing

Some good ones were written in the late 1980's like Crawford Little's "Success with Salmon"

Most Forums give good advice ontackle, flies etc but the book I always find gets me thinking about catching a Salmon is "Fly Fishing for Salmon" edited by Jack Chance and published in 1973

It's really out of date but substitute the Greenheart Rods and Silk Lines for modern equipment and there is still a wealth of practical advice within its pages.

The major difference in fishing for Salmon that I would say - compared to 40 odd years ago - is that there is a much greater use of smaller flies in lower water these days - down to 12's, 14's etc plus use of a range of tips in various lengths for the end of your fly line. Otherwise, it is still a case of "keeping your flee in the water" and covering the likely lies/taking places. There's no magic secret other than being on a water when fish are present. That is the really hard part in fishing!

Also use of smaller Irish-style Shrimp flies from April onwards from abour size 6 and upwards until a spate or Autumn is more popular as well as wee, heavy and slim tubes.

Also, try the local library and get them to order in a copy of anything you fancy in their main catalogue.
