The river had a small rise today, only 3-4", that'll be the first for over a month.
Decided to head down to near the bottom end of our beat but wasn't up for a late shift
so took the dendrobaena worms and 4lb line. Worked my way down from the New Hole
to the Rock Pool, had a very brief encounter with a sea trout of about 1.5lb in the New Hole
which jumped clear of the water but was soon off.

Seen a few bow waves in the tail end of Scaurfoot and a couple of sea trout came out of the
water, walking back up Scaurfoot there was a tremendous sunset which my camera phone
couldn't do justice to, but here's a pic anyway.

Don't know what the river levels are like in the rest of the country but here in Dumfriesshire we are at
drought levels. With the sun out and temps hitting the mid 20's I ended up walking both the middle and lower
beats of the Drumlanrig stretch and and about a mile of the old Mid Nithsdale beat today. Probably covered 3 miles
and in total I saw 3 sea trout, one a belter of about 7-8lb. We are for sure badly needing water.

Was down last night fishing light line and dendros, river had about 4" of fresh on it. Done the Rock Pool, Red Broos and New Hole, no even a knock from a parr. But noticed at the back of 9pm a rise came on.

So it was back down tonight with the dry fly tackle, sure enough about 9.30pm a few fish started dimpling the surface. I put on a dry on the dropper and an emerger on point and about 20 min later I got an offer and the sport began. As soon as it took I realised I had forgot to start the gopro that was on my napper so I missed the take.

Well it put in some cracking runs and had the old Gearfly reel singing for sure. Eventually I had it in the shallows and as I pulled it near the gravel the hook gave way, luckily I managed to grab it and after a quick pic it swam away strongly.

I was after sea troot mate, there's not a lot about but on my walks I've stood and watched some feeding during the day.

They were rising and taking something in the surface film causing no more than a dimple on the surface, much like a parr would.

The way they were rising last night I thought the emerger was the answer, the dry on the dropper was more an indicator but obviously still a chance it might take something.

Very good mate. I’ve seen big rises on the Lune and had sea trout in the same pool but fishing underneath the rises. Always thought at least some of them feeding were sea trout but never been sure.

What set up do you use? Standard trout gear?

Same rod and line I'm using for night time, not ideal but it is what it is. The rod is an old Ron Thompson Axellerator, 10' 9"
rated 6/7, a Maxcatch Gold floating line and 11ft leader working down to 3 or 4lb on the point. Basically just using what I've got.

Seems like an age since we had rain, was a walk down the river today and it's difficult to see into
in places as it's carrying a green tinge to it, it looks horrible tbh, the riverbed is covered in slime and
there are rafts of it floating slowly downstream.

Had a look at the river levels on the SEPA website and at the Drumlanrig gauge, the previous record low of 94mm
has been broken today, it's now 91mm and still falling. ?

Been 2 weeks since I last fished and it'll be a few more the way things are.

Took a walk down today, river temp is 73 degrees F, it's also a horrible green colour, can't see the bottom at 2ft deep. Took a few pics but it's no easy showing it the way it is.

Went a run up one of the tributaries last night, the Shinnel, it runs into the Scaur at Penpont.

This pic is of Aird Linn waterfall, must say the water was in great order and clear unlike the Nith.
