HF have you tried tying directly on plastic tube liners? You need to find the stiff kind as some is not suitable but you can get a nice slim body on them. I could see that working well with a small cone at the front to balance the hook and give a bit of weight. Worth experimenting maybe
Cheers T7, the 1.8 mm hard plastic tube is the one I've got, with a conehead. This should be o.k.

Had a 3lb wild brownie last night on a small plastic tube with a cone head. And then remembered I had a nice sea trout on the same fly 2 seasons ago. Nothing special just a small black and silver with small silver cone head

I'd be happy to hook a fish like that if I'm honest.
It's when your out & nothing touching your flies at all, I start getting the feeling that my flies aren't fishing properly.
Everything goes through my mind, are the flies to big, not big enough along with not going down deep enough etc...
With all this weed that's about on the river at the moment, I've only fished a floating line so far to avoid latching onto it every cast.

Cheers T7 and I hope you follow up with a nice silver sea trout.

I haptonlad, I have not seen your flies, however, what I have seen is your wonderful enthusiasm.
You will get fish when they are present in numbers.
I sometimes question my flies, however, as a top river keeper informed me, 'anything black and silver'!

One bit of advice Paul is never forget the surface lure. You can guarantee the fish know it is there and can stir them up nicely as well. Advice I need to follow more myself - I was thinking on the walk back to the car the other night that the surface lure must be my most successful sea trout fly based on the amount of time I spend fishing it.

I did fish with the surface fly backing up the pool, but didn't get any interest on it.
I'm another that should fish it more than I do.
I find it a poor hooker myself, when I do get a take, unless it turns out to be a chub or a big brownie. I can't say that I've ever landed a sea trout on a surface lure, I've hooked a few but they always seem get off very shortly after.
It's probably my own fault by not setting the hook in the first place.
I'm certainly going to fish it more often this season & get the hang of it properly ?

funny I’ve not really had hooking issues. You do get the fish that splash at it but usually if you feel something It’s when the fish is hooked. I fish the ‘mouse’ deerhair style on a single but with small flying treble at the back

I haven't had problems hooking fish with a surface lure, even with a single hook. However, my success with it is patchy; I've had the odd fish, but never found the fish getting really excited over it.

It is quite a hit and miss tactic but if you think of the hours we fish wet flies without a take and compare to the half hour or whatever as a last resort for the surface lure, it’s performance is pretty good for me! I’ve even started taking 3 rods to the river now with a surface lure on one ready to go so there’s no excuse!

Sometimes I take 2 rods to the river & even then I've been known to not even give the second rod a cast or maybe only use it for the last 5mins before I call it night.
It all depends on how my luck is sometimes...
I very rarely have a good session if everything is not going my way at night, ie tangles, miss hooking good takes etc. We've all had these nights...
I can't ever remember having a bad start & ending up having a good session, maybe because I throw in the towel before I give it time to see if my luck will change later on in the night?

On the original question about tubes, I tie mine so that the wing and other dressings are pretty much in line with the hook. For most doubles, I tie beyond the hook only because to my eye, it just looks right and a dressing that ends with the hook just looks a bit stubby to me. Not a great reason I know but the best flies to fish for sea trout are the ones that give you confidence in my view.
Hi Alwyn, please give your opinion on these tube flies.IMG_20200621_075217.jpg
