Out early again this morning and covering a few fish.
Tried a new pool that looked great and fishing a full floater with a 10 mm brass tube sparsely tied black/yellow artic fox with a bit of flash on a 12 ft leader.

You do one of those casts that just feels right .
Landed by the willows and almost straight away the Hardy ratchet sang and what a fight to.
Eventually landed a clean hen salmon of 13Ib's felt a lot bigger in the current.

Fish released will try to post pics later

Well yesterday I really did think this was an autumn morning with a good dew on the ground , fresh crisp air and a mist coming off the fields, nice to be out again.

Started off with a 10mm brass tube and felt confident but not a touch a big red fish showed to the side of me well into the teens.
Cascade was put on and after some time changed to a long wing plastic tube fly across the current and after several casts a boil behind the fly and that was it.

With a few fish showing and a clean one or two as well but still no takes to the fly.
On went a float fished prawn set at about 7 ft first trot down on a new pool and gone struck into it and what a fight for 15-20 mins.
Looking at it and was far bigger than the 13 pounder from the other day, probably close to 20 I stretched out and missed the fish with the net.
Got her in the side again and with most of the body over the net the hook slipped and she slid off the back of the net into the depths and flicked the tail and gone, gutted to say the least and a few choice words

Back on the fly another pool went through several times and not a touch.
Set the prawn at 3ft first trot down through float under and missed it.Next trout through same place and under, struck and away it went out of the water fully crashed down, me fumbling with the reel and off it came a good clean fish probably a low double.

Two lost and decided to call it a day but stopped off where i lost the good fish, first trot down , under fish on and landed an 8 pound hen, released.Marks on her head already there when landed.

So in all not a bad day, turned one over on a fly, lost 2, landed one.
Wild life was good with geese flying over in V formations and never seen it before a Sparrow hawk chasing 2 kingfishers down river at the same time.

Well done on the fish Spencer, and unlucky on the whopper! You certainly seem to be getting some action on the prawn. Ever since I watched Andy Nicholson's video years ago, I have always fancied a go at this method. Never have, and with next years restrictions pending, I doubt I ever will now. Pleased to see you're getting some action on the Usk. From your posts it seems like you've really worked hard this season and deserve success. I've never fished the Usk (which is crazy living near Cardiff!) and might try to pick your brains on the subject one day if you don't mind.

    All the best .

    Hi Phil

Good to hear from you,was a bit of a session on the river and enjoyable.
I hope they don't ban it as it is quite enjoyable floating a prawn for salmon.I believe that we all want to protect the river but some of the proposals I question.

As you said I have spent a lot of time on the new water I joined and a lot of effort gone in for a few fish.
But I knew that would be the case but I don't mind.
Hopefully a better understanding of the new water and more fish on the bank from the fly.

To be honest the videos I have done are not great"defo no Oscar material" and I just down load them to my computer.
Will try and sort something out soon.

    Cheers

    Spencer...........
