Tell you what with my beloved Dwyfor holiday site on its last year I be interested to see what the Ogwen is like nowadays as I only started sea trout fishing on that river and basically did a lot of blanking in the name of learning but I did catch a fair few salmon on spinner
I've got a week on the Dwyfor end of July any tips? I used to fish the Ogwen now and then seen a few salmon but could never connect on the fly quite short rocky pools.

is that quite low down as the banks weren't that clear below point daffyd? Looks like a nice long pool.
Its the Junction Pool which has changed dramatically since last year. The Elwy run-in is now over 3' deep so there is nothing to stop Elwy fish running.....previously it was a shallow gravel bar.
What was a nice streamy run for the fly now has little flow.😕

I've heard the junction is a good place not been down that low as my membership only covers RandA waters. I'm glad to hear about Elwy though as most of my ST have come from there lower down as like a good streamy run for the fly. Need to work out my technique for Clwyd really as quite close quarter work might take little spinner rod in future. cheers

I’ll send you a private message as it’s not an easy river nor has it ever been even when fish were numerous. I still think I have had some luck with catching some of the seasons nicest fly caught fish in the first two weeks of July for the past few years. I do put the hours in though and it’s now a question of being on the river as a run of good fish come through and knowing the likely resting spots.
you will have a much better chance at the end of July than me in terms of numbers but I’ll have a better chance of a big one so it’s one of them

brilliant that would be amazing as time will be limited with a family holiday so targeting the right places would be handy look forward to your message! Thanks

Considered fishing Bodfari last night but opted for Conwy upper G. Couple of small fish moving in Crooked early evening, arrived TYC at 9 - 7 or 8 fish jumping. Some 3-4lbs. Landed a 1lbs fish before dark in the Conwy junction, moved to the tail at dark to target the jumpers. 3 good knocks early on, then went dead until 1am. Headed home as it was getting cold and damp…. looks like Clwyd had a small rise last night. Will head out mid week to hit mid river, no surrender….

Well done. TYC can be a great pool for nightfishing, but it can be quiet sone nights
....when only the midges are biting!
If you don't mind the wading, Beaver Pool can be excellent too.

Spent a couple of hours on the lower Clwyd yesterday evening, bit of a battle in places getting to the river with all the Himalayan Balsam !
Very quiet down there, didn't see any fish moving but managed to winkle one out of about 1lb !

Well done Martin....I heard a handful of 1lb fish were caught on the Junction last night, so hopefully the start of the main run.

Thanks John, yes hopefully the main run is starting now. Had another small one yesterday evening and a few good pulls.
Hopefully see you on the Elwy when we get some water John !

I went for a sweaty walk down the river last night...it always feels a bit odd wearing shorts under waders.
Not much showing but got off the mark with a couple of very silver small ones, 3/4lb or smaller. Both on a small Dunkeld fished off a full floater. Water felt warm so I'll leave it tonight....will be too humid anyway!

On Dwyfor only managed one evening till about 11pm not a pull 2-3 other fisherman starting when dark. Then did a morning till lunch, was very low and only saw one small sea trout and someone else saw two turn over in a pool. Saw one other fisherman arriving to worm. Seems they having been catching some higher up. I was thinking maybe a squiggly worm or other worm fly might work in some deep pools next time!

Well at least I saw or heard 3 or 4 fish jumping last night. One was quite close up and looked like a fresh 2lb fish.
But no pulls. The water is very low and fish numbers seem to be well down.
Will we get a decent run of herling in August/September?
Certainly hope we get a run of fish soon John. I agree fish numbers seem to be well down, I've only seen or heard a handful of fish so far this season !
