The Conwy had a decent flood today and I've heard of 2 salmon being caught in the Betws y Coed area. No details given, but probably caught on spinners in the falling water. Quite a few other fish were seen.....there has been a traditional small spring run on the Conwy from late April to end of May, depending on water levels. The Conwy has been low for weeks, so I assume the fish have been waiting to come in.

Hi John fished Upper Gwydyr beat Sunday pm/eve until 1am. Few large fish moving at the Conwy neck of TYC and one in the tail before dusk. Suspect neck fish were salmon. Once darkness fell, 4 large ST (5-8 lbs) showing in the mid to tail section, (every 30 mins or so), covered them with almost everything in my box using 3 different rod/lines. Not even a nudge. Midges were out but not too bad, took a full range of sprays. Will try to get out tomorrow again, perseverance is the key….

It is a stunning river Spencer, with some great fly pools for salmon and sea trout.

Below Betws y Coed the river is wider and runs through a fairly flat valley bottom. The pools offer excellent day time fly fishing for salmon when there is extra water in the river. Nice easy wading on a clean gravel bottom.

Above Betws it changes in character to more resemble a Highland spate river with a steeper gradient and a series of discrete holding pools separated by fast runs, with some of the pools in mini gorges, particularly above the Lledr confluence.
Some pools are ideal for fly, spinner, shrimp or worm, and on the upper river there are lots of obvious ambush points for running fish on high water or, in the case of sewin, for fishing the fly at night in pool tails.

If God ever designed a river for game fishing, it would probably be very similar to the Conwy!
