After blanking on Tuesday decided to give it another go last night as the Sunderland Bridge gauge was up to the heady height of .25… 2cm higher than Tuesday!!!

The night started badly as in the 2nd pool I lost a half decent fish when it thrashed on the surface a few seconds after hooking. Next pool a couple of gentle tugs. Not the rat-a-tat of brownies but a reluctant sea trout. After resting it tried again and caught a reasonably clean sea trout around 5.5lb.

Then I heard a decent fish in fast water below. Saw a big bow wave heading straight for me, instantly thought mmm otter! Then it disappeared and I realised it was a good fish.

Moved back upstream to the pool where I’d lost the fish. Nothing this time but moved into the faster water below it which changed into the head of a big pool. Only a handful of casts and my rod was virtually pulled out my hand. Huge headshakes no thrashing and I thought I was attached to a good salmon. Then it tore off downstream. I started to think I might have foul hooked an otter as it sped around the pool trying to get under bushes on the far bank. After several minutes of having no control, rod fully bent I got the fish close, I could see it wasn’t an otter but a large fish. By this time I was half way down the pool up to my waist. The netting went easily and I realised I’d just caught my biggest ever sea trout. Happy Days.

Sensational fish! Well done!

After getting the treble straightened a couple of weeks back and then fishing last Friday night which was a farce ( with having a heated argument with a couple of dog walkers lighting the whole river up with a powerful torch... at midnight! Thought it was another angler coming down at first and kept quiet but then the throwing things in the pool i was fishing down and blinding me with the light had me not able to keep my mouth shut! Half an hour later the police copter hovered almost overhead ( think it may have been a traffic accident close by? ) The noise and vibration of them things was unpleasant to say the least and had me heading for home a bit miffed off to say the least! Anyway was back for more last night .. fished 9- midnight. Nothing seen but a couple heard in the distance. River still low with the recent rain missing us...again! A bright night with an almost full moon but with the only chance to get out and having had the occasional fish in the past in the same conditions cracked on! No leader on just 9' of ultragreen straight to a 1' black/silver needle tube. A small (for the Wear) but very welcome fish right at last knockings at the end of the pool with only another few casts to go before heading home. No helicopters or dog walkers lighting me up tonight... Bliss!

Good god no wonder you had to say something, people throwing stuff in the river and lighting it up at midnight!!! They’d have known my feelings if I was there for sure!
Well done for last nights fish. It’s now .22 Sunderland Bridge gauge. Don’t remember ever seeing it that low before. Not that many nights left now to chase the silver ghosts unfortunately.

Unbelievable.... Was still raging driving home! Almost done myself on a night now. A lot of the trees and bankside vegetation have turned now and started dropping so will have leaves to contend with aswell. Should really end on a high note but with the low water and not getting out daytime I might just give it one more night the next chance I get..we'll see. 👍

Well give it a few hours tonight on the middle Wear..fished 7-10 p.m. The night fishing gear is normally put away mid September but with the mild weather and the getting out earlier and getting home earlier suiting me better, fished on a bit later this year. Quite a few fish seen and heard tonight. Lost 2 after gentle takes and the usual splashing about on the surface and managed a wee one but very welcome one second run down. Another couple of gentle tugs inbetween, all in the first hour and half. Moon got out, temperature dropped to 6°c and the mist started and that was that. Got to be the latest night time fish of the season for me.
