Ah well, here we go again with another season.

The opening ceremony took place on the 25th of February and was held on the DGAA beat who have been going for 100 years.

Last years returns showed an increase in Salmon and Grilse compared to the previous year which was good to see.

Sea trout numbers however were poor as expected, no doubt the lowest since catches were recorded. 🙁 Let's hope there's an upturn this season.

It's good to see the days are stretching out. Took this pic of the Cample burn at 6.25pm last night when walking down the Kirkbog Road. In the summer I'll be heading down this same road for a bit of sea troot fishing, albeit a good few hours later. Tight lines to anyone having a cast this season.

I've been out and about a few times in the last two months, wee flies, big flies, Raps and Mepps but no joy.
There has been to my knowledge 4 salmon caught so far, all off middle beats.
The river is sitting at summer low and is dirty with algae and slime, finding streamy water to fish is becoming a problem, however
I was down on Monday night and to my surprise there was four of us on the river, two worming and two of us with the fly.
No joy for me but I did see 3 or 4 Sea Troots moving about in the thin water at the tail of Scaurfoot and then went the light went
half a dozen of them pushed forward from the Rock Pool up into Scaurfoot.

Looking up the Rock Pool as the sun set.

Been a while since my last post on here, that's because nothing has been happening for me, lol.

Been trying everything, flea, spinning and the garden flea but nowt working.

There's been fish caught although certainly not plenty it's still good to hear of some being landed.

Thought my luck was about to change on Thursday after tea when I hooked into a salmon but 5 seconds later it was offski.

Anyway, last night conditions were perfect so I headed down at 10.30pm for my first sea troot session of the season. I was surprised to find another angler bankside waiting for the light to go.

I had the craic with John and then went to fish the pool below him. I fished it down twice without a touch or even hearing a splash so headed back up and heard the same story from John.

I then fished the top of that pool and had the same result so at 1am I decided I'd lost more than enough sleep so headed home. At least the night fishing cobwebs have been dusted off. 😉

Pic from last night.

Aboot time.🤣

Posts have been as scarce as the fish on the Nith thread this season, I've tried everything but up until tonight nothing has worked. I've spun, wormed, had the double hander out, the switch rod and also the single hander. Even went light line and small flies and nymphs, light line worming too but the river seemed devoid of life, hardly seen a tail.

Was back down tonight with the 4lb line and worm, the river is pretty low at 2" and there's a lot of scum on the bottom. Finding water with enough of a flow to fish the worm can be a bit of a problem as it's canal like in a lot of places. Started off at the neck of a pool tonight and for a change I got picked up by a very lively wee Grilse which hadn't been in all that long. Ah well it's took long enough but at least the blank is off.😅

Nice fish - are you sure it wasn’t a seatrout? 👀

Back down yesterday after tea, spun and wormed it. Had 2 Herling and some wee Troots on a flying C but that was it.

Down again this morning to worm it, one rattle off a wee troot but nothing else, seems to be devoid of life.

Spoke to a couple of anglers and it's the same story from them, it's hard work.

River has fell in quick, down to 4" tonight and the bottom is deadly with slime. Tried the worm and light line this morning, never got as much as a tap from a parr and on more than once I was like a young bullock on concrete, no good for the lower back.

Anyway back out after tea with the switch rod and down my favourite run and second time down I managed a wee Grilse on a size 12 treble cascade, this same fly has been good to me over the last two years. Pics below.

Decided to venture out on Thursday for a chuck, river is low at 1" so getting pools to fish ain't easy as I much prefer running water.

Anyway got started at the back of 10pm and came down the run, did hear 2 fish splash and had a decent knock which never stuck. When changing my point fly I heard another 2 fish splash which gives you a bit of encouragement.

Back up to the top and down the run again, no more splashes or knocks so moved to the tail of the pool above, nowt happening there. So it was up to the top of the same pool and the result was the same so hometime.

Back down last night and did it all again, never even heard one splash, be more life in a graveyard me thinks. It'll be a night in the hoose tonight. 😂

Finally we had a fair dowsing of the wet stuff and today the river hit 5ft so should fish okay this week.

But guess what? I've got Covid and feel like sh!t, sods law isn't it.

Here's hoping it's still in good order when I'm feeling better. 🤞

Well with Covid behind me I've been doon giving it a bash, we'd a cracking lift at the beginning of last week which I've mentioned. I finally got out last Thursday and Friday but never seen a tail.

We get the grandkids every 2nd weekend so I gave Saturday a miss and took them crabbing and cave exploring down the shore.

Gave it 2 shots on Monday, first with the 14fter then later with the switch rod, again no sign of life.
Tuesday morning it was the switch rod again but nothing doing so decided to change it up on Tuesday after tea and give the worm a trot. River has been in as good a nick as you'd want, fining down after a good spate.

Anyway, no offers on the worm but did see fish in one of the pools, a nice looking one that must've been 10lbish head and tailed 3 times, each time it was going across the pool. Another couple splashed a bit further up so it gave me a bit more confidence seeing a few.

Back down this morning with the switch rod, floating line with a 5ft slow sinking poly leader and a green butt Cascade double on the dropper and silver stoat treble on point. Had only been fishing 10 min and got an offer which stuck and duly landed a coloured fish of about 7lb which had took the Cascade, happy days.

The plan was to head back after tea but the heavens opened at 3pm and hasn't stopped, gonna be a banker tomorrow again.:(

We've had no shortage of water up here over the last week, just when you think it gonna drop into a foot the following day you wake up to see the gauges are showing a rising river.

Today was no different with the river hitting 4ft this morning, I decided to cut some firewood in the morning and head down to my usual haunt after tea. No surprises that I had the car park to myself again.

There was a fair flow coming down this pool but it eased off slightly nearer the tail so I targeted that area with a floating Tadpole and bait controller. About 20 minutes in a fish took midstream, it felt weighty from the get go and it gave a good account of itself.

Eventually I got it out, quick pic and it was back in the drink, a fish of 14.5lb.

Back out for a quick throw today, not been down since I got the last fish due to a meniscus tear in my right knee, I swear if I was a dug I'd be put doon. 🙄

Anyway, parked up and hobbled down to the pool and tried the worm at the neck, within 10 min I got a couple of knocks which in all honesty felt like a troot.

But then it knocked a bit more and I lifted into a wee Grilse which was landed and sent on it's way.

Only gave it another 30 min then headed back before the knee pain worsened. Gotta keep plodding on though, it'll ease a bit eventually.
